Gerda Kallen 1944 - 2021
by CMC Mail Monster 25-Feb-2021
It is with great sadness that we inform you that Gerda Kallen, Urs Kallen's partner and wife of 54 years, passed away suddenly on February 3rd.
For those of you who don't know the Kallen's, Urs has been a driving force in the Rockies climbing community for the past 5 decades (and a member of of the CMC for 55 years), one of its leading climbers, guidebook writer, historian and mentor to numerous younger climbers, and Gerda welcomed all into their home and lives. Many of the bolts placed in the Bow Valley were provided courtesy of their daughter working for Hilti at the time. Gerda was warm, kind, supportive and always saw the lighter, often humorous, side of life as she and Urs faced the challenges of growing their business, raising a family, and Urs's climbing adventures.
Gerda always was a big part of the ebb and flow of their working life (the real boss). What we remember most is that Gerda always had a great smile and distinctive laugh and a great sense of humour. We can honestly say we don’t think we ever saw her not smile and laugh. She was a mother, a grandmother, and most importantly a life partner to Urs. Together they shared many adventures, raised kids and ran a successful business. Her suddenly passing away last week has left a huge hole for her family and friends.

Public Obituary:
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Gerda, on Tuesday, February 3, 2021 at the age of 76 years.
Gerda, the second of four siblings, was born Gerda Harri in 1944, to parents Klara and Ernst Harri, in the idyllic mountain village of Kandersteg, Switzerland. Gerda met her husband Urs from the neighbouring town of Frutigen. They shared many outdoor adventures in the Swiss Alps. Urs proposed to Gerda at the top of Aermighorn and they were married in July of 1967. Gerda had great dreams to travel to New York but they chose Canada instead. They arrived in Toronto in 1965, then travelled back and forth to Switzerland. In 1972, Gerda and Urs made Calgary their home, to be near the mountains. One of Gerda’s proudest accomplishments was earning her pilot’s license. Gerda flew her own Cessna plane through the Rockies while Urs took photos of their adventures. Always an entrepreneur, Gerda had her own hair salon in the Tigerstedt Block in Crescent Heights. In 1986, Gerda and Urs started a family business together, which would become one of Calgary’s finest, boutique print shops. Gerda took great pride in her work and the numerous close relationships she developed with clients over the years.
Gerda and Urs enjoyed many camping trips in their VW van, driving all over Western Canada and up to the Arctic Circle. Gerda loved reading by the campfire and canoeing. However, after they tipped over in a lake with their camera equipment, Gerda decided that they should each have their own inflatable kayak instead.
Besides her loving husband Urs, Gerda is survived by her two daughters, Nadine (Kurty) and Silvia (Jason); and her wonderful grandchildren whom she loved very much, Jonah, Chelsea, Elliot and Sam, of Calgary, AB. She is also survived by many Swiss relatives who cannot be named for fear of leaving somebody out.
We love you, mom. We will miss our special breakfasts together. You always went all out!
We will have a Celebration of Life in the summer when we can all be together outdoors. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you do something nice for somebody else unexpectedly, and without explanation. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed on Gerda’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
In living memory of Gerda Kallen, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Big Rock Lean-up 2020
by Allan Derbyshire 20-May-2020
On Wednesday May 13, the CMC proudly completed its 30th anniversary clean-up project at the Big Rock near Okotoks. Five bags of assorted garbage were accumulated by the following members:
Dennis Kok, Choc Quinn, Nicole ? and her 4 kids, Pierre Champness and family, Trevor Jones, and Allan Derbyshire.
With a tear in either eye, I salute you all – salt of the earth.
Noteworthy by their absence were ALL THE REST OF THE CLUB!! The idea, if you have been out of the loop for a few decades, is that you show up at these well-publicized CMC events or join another club or die. Especially noteworthy in absentia were the CMC Executive, who I will now proceed to berate on behalf of the rest of you vacuous, malodorous, toffee-nosed, idle perverts - as there’s only one thing worse than being talked about and that’s not being talked about (thanks, Oscar).
There really is no excuse, Rudie. Do you really think that looking after your new-born is better than picking up someone else’s trash? Now, I know you were only leaning drunkenly on the bar that night when someone (probably Wiens) whispered in your ear, “Do you want to be Prez?” and you thought it was “Do you want a Pez?” but a responsibility is a responsibility even among the CMC. Hanging is obviously too good – it’s a good kick up the arse that you need. It’s a bloody good job the Burgess twins aren’t still around, or that’s what you’d be getting. OK, you get one more chance, and that goes for the rest of you quasi-upwardly mobile types, too.
BE THERE NEXT YEAR - it's ALWAYS the 2nd Wednesday in May! ‘Nuff said (for now).

Subject: RE: Hiking/climbing trail access by Francis Cooke landfill
Hello gents,
I wanted to let you know about some more development work which will affect trail users accessing climbing routes around the Francis Cooke landfill site.
The fencing work we talked about in January has now been completed but we are now doing something similar on the West side of the property. Our Board decided to upgrade the fencing on the West and South sides of the landfill site to the same standard, so that the entire property will have a 6 foot fence around it. The new fence line will run to our property boundary on the South/West corner of the site and will block part of the quad/hiking trail often used by hikers/climbers that runs through the SW corner of the FCRL site. Trail users accessing the climbing routes on the West side of the site this way will therefore soon have to forge a new trail that runs around the new fence line. This isnt a huge detour, but a change nonetheless that I thought I should keep you posted on.
If you are able to post a notice on your Facebook page as before that would be helpful? Ive attached some signage that we will be posting on the South corner of the site in the next few days to let trail users know about the changes. Work has already commenced (sorry for the late notice but our Board requested the work be completed as soon as possible) and the fence line will likely be completed this week.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact myself directly.
Many thanks,
Andrew Calder CAO

CMC 2017/2018 Slide Show Schedule

CMC Slide Show Schedule 2017-2018
Hello everyone. Im happy to report that weve got a great line-up of shows for you this coming winter season. It will be fab to see everyone there. All the shows will be at the Ironwood in Calgary and will start at 7pm sharp, so it's a great idea to get there early. Here are the presenters and dates to mark on your calendar:
Will Gadd Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Yes, thats right, Will Gadd. Will is one of the best known and most accomplished climbers in Canada. He has been performing at the highest levels in the mixed climbing scene for over 20 years with many of the most difficult M routes in the world to his credit. He also grew up in the Bow Valley climbing scene and has lots of memories of CMC legends from his childhood. Definitely a show not to be missed!
TBA Wednesday, December 13, 2017 Greg Tos Wednesday, January 17, 2018 Greg Tos has been the principal developer at super cragging area Echo Canyon near Canmore. Not only has Greg put up dozens of new climbs and built kilometres of trails, but he somehow manages to climb 5.14 as well. Greg is a very fine photographer and this will be a fantastic show.
Laurie Skreslet Wednesday, February 21, 2018 The legendary Laurie Skreslet has agreed to do a show for us in February. Laurie is extremely well known for being the first Canadian to summit Mt. Everest in 1982. He was also a key member of the 1986 Canadian Everest expedition that put Sharon Wood on top via a new route on the Tibetan side of the mountain. Here at home he was a major contributor to the development of waterfall ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies. Laurie is one of the finest presenters you will ever experience and we are extremely fortunate to have him coming to the Ironwood in February.
Reg Smart Wednesday, March 14, 2018 The quietly hard core and damn nice guy, Reg Smart, will be in town in March to share his many climbing experiences with us. From early one day ascents of routes like the Salathe Wall on El Cap, to pushing the standards of Canadian rock climbing on the crags of Ontario and big rock in Alberta, Reg has been a stalwart in our sport. Reg was an early proponent of the free solo, and was as bold as they come. He also loves a good IPA and brews his own seriously good beer. Lets make sure we give him a warm welcome with a great crowd and maybe even a few beers. Cheers everyone.
April 18, 2018, Maybe TBA. Stay tuned.
/AB (Andrew Brash)

Richard (Dick) Lofthouse passes away 2016-11-23
by Ken Wiens 24-Nov-2016
R Lofthouse
I have been advised by Ian Lofthouse, that yesterday, Wednesday Nov 23, Richard (Dick) Lofthouse passed away. Richard has been a long time honorary life member of the CMC with an extensive resume of contributions to Canadian mountaineering and service to the CMC. He will be sadly missed.
Excerpts from "Pushing the Limits" (2000), by Chic Scott:
"Lofthouse was one of the founding members of the British expatriate fraternity. When he came to Canada in 1954 he had already been climbing several years in the Lake District...when Brian Greenwood showed up they established a partnership that lasted several years. Perhaps their finest achievement together was the fourth ascent of Mount Alberta in 1958. It was the first time the mountain had been climbed without a bivouac. Lofthouse returned to England at the end of the decade to do a Master's degree in biochemistry, but by 1962 was back in Canada. By now the CMC was in full swing, and "all like-minded people were getting together". Lofthouse teamed up with Greenwood and Heinz Kahl in June of that year to finish Red Shirt on Yamnuska. That same year he also climbed Gollum Grooves and over the next few years added Chockstone Corner, Bottleneck and Pangolin to his list of first ascents. In 1968, with Greenwood, Archie Simpson and Jon Jones, he made the first winter ascent of Eisenhower Tower on Castle Mountain
In 1965....Dick Lofthouse travelled to Chamonix ...climbed the east face of the Aiguille du Moine,....the Bonatti route on the east face of the Grand Capucin."
Dick considered the CMC home, and climbed extensively with many members of the club, including Dick Howe, Brian Greenwood, Jon Jones, Heinz Kahl and many others.
This is a sad day and we have lost one of the legends of Canadian Mountaineering and of the Calgary Mountain Club.
Additional details will be available in the coming days.

TTOTM - an introduction
by David D 18-Nov-2016
TTOTM (New!!) - Dec 7
Dave, Gerry, and Ken sat in the Ironwood recently and (with input from Pat "I love you guys" MacIntyre) floated the idea of introducing what we are tentatively going to call THAT TIME OF THE MONTH - the concept being to get your ass down to the pub on the first Wednesday of each month with the express intent of planning or joining an activity with others who are there.
You can bring your own idea, drink with someone who is planning something, buy a drink for someone who wants to drink with someone who is planning something, or simply plan to do some drinking.
Dave kicked off a session recently looking for people to climb Mt St Elias with. Several practiced drinking with Dave. He may still be looking at the next TTOTM Wednesday.
No reminiscing allowed. Only modest discussion of *current* conditions: i.e. conditions relevant to immediate objectives none of this I was there last year and it was this deep bullshit or you used to need a 3 Friend for the 3rd pitch but now theyve ruined it with bolts its only 5.8 blah blah weak-assed git whining.
Parties, rock and ice climbs, gym attendance, and ski / canoe / bike / hike / getoutthere ideas all welcomed
No bragging. Save trip reports and discussion of Canmore real estate prices for slide show nights. The idea is to look forward.
[No rules - ignore everything above that Dave wrote. - ed].
Come out to the CMC bar night on the first Wednesday of the month - bigger crowds, cheaper beer, special treats from Pat. We still meet on all the other Wednesdays, but for those members that can only get out once a month - the first Wednesday will have a bigger turnout.
Next TTOTM Wednesday - Dec 7, 7:30PM - ??, Ironwood Stage and Grill

Rates are $30 / night (ACC hut members) or $40 / night (non ACC hut members). We will have paypal setup in the new year (but the cost will go up a couple of bucks and you risk the spots all being gone.)
We might have midnight moon-lit ski competitions again.
Also, on behalf on the club, I solemnly swear to no longer embarrass the club or myself by challenging 6'4" Swedes to duels after I have polished off a bottle of whiskey.

He had to change his plane ticket to accommodate us, so we had better show him some good support! Dave was one of the leading Canadian climbers in the 1980s and along with Sam Cohen, started Gripped Magazine in the late 90s. Truly hope to see you there. We know you've been hearing about the earthquakes in Nepal.
Many of us in the mountain community have travelled there and feel a great love for the place, and I know lots of people have daydreamed about going there...apparently the situation is dire...we've decided to go for it and run a fundraiser. We've booked the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Centre (1320 5 Ave NW, Calgary) for May 22. We will open the doors at 6pm and can go on until 1am. The sport drinking award could also be achievable as we will have a cash bar. There will also be a silent auction (I am looking for items by the way). Laurie Skreslet will be giving a short presentation and we will have the Nepali community there as well with dancers and food. I truly hope we can make this an impressive effort and raise a huge amount of money.
Please come out, even if just to put in a short appearance, have a drink, a chat and make a donation.
The CMC has already paid $650 to this cause by renting the hall for the evening.
We are trying to also get online donations setup, but in the meantime, if you can't attend the event, we can arrange for cheques. Contact cmc.mailmonster@kgw-consultants.com and Ken will provide you with mailing instructions etc.
Thanks!

Thanks!

Chic Scott Slide Show - Jan 21
by Mail Monster 04-Jan-2015
Jan 21 - Ironwood - 7:00 PM
Chic Scott is an honorary member of the CMC, the Alpine Club of Canada and the ACMG.
In the year 2000 Chic was awarded with the Bill March Summit of Excellence Award at the Banff Mountain Film Festival.
He is one of our true mountain legends. Chic will be presenting a very personal retrospective of his own climbing and mountain career which he has never shown in public before. We are very fortunate that Chic has agreed to travel in from Banff to pay us a visit and share his stories with us. Look forward to accounts of the first winter ascent of Assiniboine, huge and epic ski traverses, climbing in the Alps, Himalaya, the Yukon, and all of the ups and downs in between. I'm hugely excited for this presentation and look forward to seeing everyone at the Ironwood on January the 21st!
As always the shows will be on Wednesdays at the Ironwood in Calgary starting at 7pm, so it is always nice to come a few minutes before the show begins to have time to grab a beer and find a seat.

Larry Stanier Slide Show
by Slap 07-Jun-2014
CMC Slideshow June 11th
Well known and respected climber and guide
Larry Stanier
Larry has agreed to make a little room in his very busy guiding schedule and come to the Ironwood to present to us. He has been climbing for several decades and is one of the most respected climbers and mountain guides in Canada. Larry has many difficult first ascents to his credit (such as The Drip at the Centre of the Universe on Mt. Birdwood) and has climbed all over the world bagging difficult peaks such as Shivling along the way. Larry is also an incredibly nice guy. For next week Larry plans on focusing on low altitude mountaineering in places like Iceland, Sardinia and Japan. Should be a very interesting show!
This will be the last show until next fall, and I really hope to see as many people out as possible we missed you the last time!
All best,
Slap

Margo's Presentation on Dec 18th
by Laurel Ambrose 09-Dec-2013
Hello, CMCers:
Is Margo's event on the 18th exclusive for CMC members? There are a few of us based out of Canmore who are in various outdoor clubs other than the CMC who would like to attend this event at the Ironwood, but I can't seem to find information indicating whether it's a CMC-only event or not. Thanks so much for replying.
I can be reached at lapepper@shaw.ca.
Kind regards,
Laurel Ambrose

It\'s a bar. A nice bar. But, it\'s a bar - you\'ll be more than welcome. Depending on variants in clientele, you might be more worried about... finger prints. Sensitive audience members might want to consider Saran Wrap.

Geoff,
I have a spare bedroom (occupied at the moment by a larger tree planter sort who is putting up Xmus lights to finance the rest of his winter) that might suit for a bit. It\'s smallish, but then... well... how do I say this...

CMC Slide Show Schedule 2013-2014
Hello everyone. After being asked a few times, where are the shows? Ive managed to get moving on putting a few speakers together for this season. Once again Pat will be hosting us at the Ironwood Stage and Grill in Inglewood in Calgary. All shows will begin at 7pm unless otherwise mentioned. Im looking forward to seeing everyone again.
November Wednesday the 13th
7pm, Ironwood, Calgary
Ian Welsted K6 West First Ascent.
Ian has agreed to join us for our November show fresh off of his and Raphael Slawinskis first ascent of K6 West in Pakistan. The mountain has been on the radar of some of the worlds top climbers in the past few years and Ian and Raph made one of the landmark ascents of the year. We will be some of the first to get the story first hand. This promises to be a spectacular show. Thanks and congratulations on the climb Ian!
December Wednesday the 18th
7pm, Ironwood, Calgary
Margo Talbot Ice Queen
Many of you will recognize Margos name from the cover of Waterfall Ice (I cant remember which edition) and very probably as the author of the climbing confession/memoir All That Glitters, which discusses the Rockies climbing scene in the 1990s and 2000s. Many of you probably just know her. Margot will be talking about all of these things Im sure, not to mention a few ice climbs somewhere in there.
January Wednesday the 15th
7pm, Ironwood, Calgary
Brandon Pullan
Editor of Gripped Magazine and eccentric mountain type person, Brandon is sure to entertain, if his award winning performances at the Night of Lies are anything to go by. I will write more later, I just wanted to let you know I hadnt fallen off the side of the planet.
more to follow
Look forward to seeing everyone on November 13th!

beginner climbing course?
by Jodi 30-May-2013
Hi all, don't know how else to post this question, so doing it here: I'm travelling from Germany to the Kananaskis area this summer with my family and looking for an affordable 1 day climbing course for beginners (adults) that i can surprise my husband with for our anniversary. plan is to have taken a start up course for indoor climbing in germany before leaving. Am hoping to hook him on it enough to try "the real thing" in the rockies. any suggestions as to where/who to contact? all i can find online will cost about $450, way out of our range. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

CMC Slide Show Season 2012-2013
Hi Everyone. Ive managed to put together a few shows in consecutive months, so thought I would outline the upcoming slideshow season. The venue remains the Ironwood, and weve moved the start time to 7pm, giving us a little more breathing room.
All shows are on Wednesday nights at the Ironwood Stage and Grill and start at 7pm sharp.
December 19th, 2012 - Raphael SlawinskiRaph is a Rockies fixture and has now amassed an absolutely stunning volume of extremely difficult routes. He is without question one of the finest climbers in Canada and despite that is still an incredibly humble and friendly guy. He has graciously agreed to share his latest ascents with us! For some pre-reading on Raphs resume please see http://raphaelslawinski.blogspot.ca/ and also this link http://vimeo.com/21932853 for an entertaining video of Raph on his preferred medium of Rockies choss, as well as some Dr. Evil scenes of him and his cat Dr. Bigglesworth.
January 16th, 2013 - David Dornian Mongolia Our very own DD will present on his trip to Mongolia last summer. David as many of you know, is the mastermind behind our old News of the World, a publication we should request him to resurrect. Dave is a very accomplished and respected climber as well as a UIAA official, intellectual and sly humourist. Maybe Brenda will even join him on stage?
February 13th, 2013 - Andy Genereux Ghost Rock Andy is a prolific and long-time Canadian Rockies rock climber and author of several rock guide books such as Yamnuska Rock and Ghost Rock. Andy has a truly amazing number of difficult first ascents to his name and has put together an all new show on rock climbs of the Ghost. Not to be missed. Check out his web-site here: http://www.ghostriverproductions.ca/
March 20th, 2013 Steve Swenson One of the true hard-core Many of you will know the name Steve Swenson and will associate him with the absolute elite in difficult big ascents. From the second ascent of the North Face of Mt. Alberta in 1981, to the summit of K2 via the North Ridge of K2 in 1990, to the first ascent of the very difficult Saser Kangri II in 2011, Steve has been at the top level of alpinism for over 30 years. http://steveswensonsblog.blogspot.ca/ He is also past president of the American Alpine Club. We are very fortunate to have Steve coming to present to us March 20th. We would like to make this event in conjunction with CASA, as Steve was asked by them to present this year. Unfortunately for CASA we had already scooped Steve. I agreed that we would pass the hat around for CASA. More details to follow.
April 2013 TBA! Thanks for reading and really look forward to seeing you out at the shows.
All very best,
SLAP

Maybe you too have experienced some of these same issues and will join me in a group therapy session at the Ironwood Wednesday Feb. 20th, 7pm sharp.
